Dr. Christopher Mudd Performing Advanced, Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement

Fellowship-trained adult hip and knee reconstruction surgeon Christopher D. Mudd, M.D., of Orthopedic Associates is performing hip replacement procedures using the muscle-sparing direct anterior technique for patients meeting specific criteria. Patients who would like to learn more or schedule an appointment with Dr. Mudd in St. Louis at 1050 Old Des Peres Road, Suite 100, or in Columbia, Illinois, at 1000 Eleven South, Suite 3C, are encouraged to call (314) 714-3155.

Anterior hip replacement is similar to a traditional hip replacement in that it is used to replace a damaged or diseased joint with an artificial joint. However, one of the key differences between the two surgeries is where the surgery is performed on the hip. The anterior approach takes place at the front of the hip instead of at the back, which allows the surgeon to work between the muscles as well as provides better access to the joint without disrupting or cutting muscle or other soft tissue.

While the long-term results of anterior hip replacement are equal to or greater than those of a traditional hip replacement, the major difference is seen after surgery as well as throughout recovery, where the anterior approach provides patients with the following benefits:

  • Better range of motion following surgery.
  • Faster recovery.
  • Less post-operative pain.
  • Lower risk of dislocation.

"At Orthopedic Associates, we are all dedicated to offering the latest evidenced-based procedures to provide our patients with the best possible outcomes," says Dr. Mudd. "This surgery is just one of the many examples of our dedication to providing our patients with superior access to the exceptional orthopedic care they need to get back to an active, healthy lifestyle."
