Direct Anterior Hip Replacement Success Story

Dr. Christopher Mudd, board-certified joint replacement surgeon at Orthopedic Associates in St. Louis, is one of the few surgeons in the area who currently does direct anterior total hip arthroplasty, otherwise known as anterior hip replacement.

An innovative, less invasive procedure, the anterior approach to a total hip replacement provides a number of benefits to patients due to having the incision occur in the front of the hip versus the side or rear. These benefits include:

  • Faster recovery
  • Minimized muscle intrusion
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Reduced risk of postoperative dislocation

Dr. Mudd recently performed the minimally invasive, direct anterior total hip arthroplasty on William Decker, a 73-year-old retiree, who had a severe bout of arthritis in his right hip.
