Dr. Gregory Nelson Highlights Robotic Breakthrough in Shoulder Replacement on KMOX

Orthopedic Associates’ Dr. Gregory Nelson was recently featured in an interview with KMOX Health Reporter Fred Bodimer, where he discussed how robotic technology is transforming shoulder replacement surgery and improving patient outcomes.

During the segment, Dr. Nelson highlighted the growing use of reverse shoulder arthroplasty, a procedure commonly performed for patients experiencing significant shoulder pain due to conditions such as severe arthritis or a torn rotator cuff. While this technique has been used in the United States since 2007, recent advancements in robotic-assisted technology are elevating its precision and effectiveness.

“Some patients come in with significant deformity, which can make accurate implant placement challenging,” Dr. Nelson explained. “With robotic assistance, we’re able to plan the procedure in advance and place the implant exactly where it needs to be.”

Using advanced systems like Mako SmartRobotics™, surgeons can create a detailed, patient-specific surgical plan prior to entering the operating room. This technology allows for enhanced accuracy compared to traditional methods that rely heavily on imaging alone, ultimately helping improve alignment and long-term outcomes.

Dr. Nelson also noted that robotics is playing an increasingly important role across orthopaedics, not just in shoulder procedures. As the technology continues to evolve, it may also help surgeons collect valuable data to further refine surgical techniques and patient care.

“Robotics is coming into play in a lot of ways, and we’re just beginning to see the benefits,” he said.

Orthopedic Associates remains committed to adopting innovative technologies that enhance precision, improve recovery, and deliver the highest level of care to patients.
